Love and Other Consolation Prizes by Jamie Ford

Love and Other Consolation Prizes by Jamie Ford is a historical novel, inspired by a true story, about a half-Chinese orphan named Ernest who is raffled off as a prize at the 1909 Seattle World's Fair and ends up as a houseboy in a high-class brothel, where he finds an unconventional family with the madam's daughter and a kitchen maid. The story alternates between Ernest's childhood in 1909 and his life in 1962, as he grapples with secrets from his past while his wife suffers from dementia and his daughter investigates his history for a news story. It's a story about love, family, and identity set against the backdrop of early 20th-century Seattle's vice, suffrage, and technological marvels.
